Reid decides Senate bill will include a public plan 10-26-09
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid from his speech October 26, 2009, "As we’ve gone through this process, I’ve concluded, with the support of the White House and Senators Baucus and Dodd, that the best way forward is to include a public option with an opt-out provision for states.
Under this concept, states will be able to determine whether the public option works well for them and will have the ability to opt-out." Hear full speech HERE. Translation: As I have gone through this process it has become increasingly clear to me that the American public is a great deal smarter than I originally anticipated, especially those in my district - the ones who are considering whether to vote for me next year. On their behalf and in their best interest I have decided to call the Public Option by another name -The Incremental State Bankruptcy Opt Out/Opt In Provision. This new provision will place all of the decision on the backs of state legislators who have nothing left to do but spend hours away from trying to keep their state budgets above water. By allowing states to opt in or our, depending on which way the wind is blowing, we can open the doors for a final product that will be so complicated that it will take away from our own tree massacre when we wrote all of those federal term papers. Just to reassure my fellow public option fan club members, I have stopped counting votes in the senate and have now started counting the number of states that will make this work through the back door. After all, we all need to be re-elected next year. FACT: Congress has lost complete touch with America and is clinging instead to polls and the direction of paid lobbyists. States are not as much interested in the federal government giving them the right to opt in or out as they are in letting Washington know that they are sick and tired of the fed usurping state rights.
